Is There a Way to Stop Snoring During Sleep?

Snoring is common and many people take snoring as a sign of sound sleep, but exactly the opposite is true. Snoring not only disturbs others, but also causes serious harm to our health.

When breathing normally, the airflow enters the respiratory tract without any obstacles and makes no noise. However, when the soft palate in the throat becomes hypertrophied and sagged for some reason, narrowing the airway, and the partial collapse of the soft tissues of the throat causes vibrations that lead to snoring.


So, can the snoring be stopped? First, let’s identify the three types of snoring which lead to poor sleep. Simple snoring, physiological snoring and pathological snoring.

Simple snoring

This type of snoring is relatively mild, and usually disappears after changing sleeping positions, having proper rest, or using a suitable pillow.

Physiological snoring

Physiological snoring is caused by increased nasal resistance due to cold or nasal infections, causing the collapse of soft tissues in the pharyngeal cavity during sleep. It is important to treat these types of infections timely to avoid this type of snoring.

Pathological snoring

Pathological snoring is often associated with a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea or OSA. OSA refers to the long-term severe snoring including loud snoring, short-term wheezing, and apnea lasting more than 10 seconds alternately during sleep. These symptoms are potentially life-threatening and should be examined by a medical professional for treatment as soon as possible.

How to treat snoring?

If your snoring is serious, a qualified medical professional can conduct testing using polysomnography or PSG examination to determine the type of snoring problem or obstructive sleep apnea you have and create a proper treatment plan. Otherwise for mild snoring symptoms here are some tips:

1.Lose weight

Obesity is one of the key factors of OSA. Losing weight can effectively relieve many snoring symptoms.

2.Quit smoking and drinking

Smoking can stimulate the edema of the nasopharyngeal mucosa and cause chronic inflammation. Alcohol can paralyze nerves, reduce muscle tension, block airways, and aggravate snoring.

3.Strengthen upper respiratory muscles

Strengthening the muscles of the upper respiratory tract can also expand airways, helping to eliminate snoring. Breathing exercises, singing or playing instruments such as a harmonica, tuba or trumpet, can also help.

4.Choose the right pillow

The height of your pillow also creates snoring. Either too soft or too hard of a pillow is not recommended. It is important to choose a pillow which can adjust perfectly to your head height and support your cervical spine.

5.Sleep on your side

Nico de Vries, professor from the University of Antwerp in Belgium as well as medical expert in the diagnosis and treatment of OSA, once did a research on head position and apnea. The results showed that snoring could be effectively relieved when sleeping in side position. Sleeping on your side can eliminate snoring. When sleeping on your side, the change of your head position and neck is key to eliminating snoring. When the head is turned sideways, the tongue and soft tissues will also tilt sideways or forward due to gravity, significantly reducing the risk of airway collapse and obstruction, thereby reducing the frequency of snoring.
